About allergies
Some infants are sensitive to certain proteins in their diet, which can trigger an allergic reaction by the immune system. Infants are prone to allergies because their digestive and immune systems have not yet fully matured. The risk of developing allergies is greatest if at least two first degree relatives (parents and siblings) have a history of allergy.
How Novalac Hypoallergenic helps
Breast milk is the most compatible nutrition for babies and breastfeeding may reduce the chances of babies developing allergies later on.
However, if you have already chosen to bottle feed and your baby is considered at risk of developing allergies, then Novalac Hypoallergenic formula may be suitable. It contains partially hydrolysed whey proteins which are less likely to cause an allergic reaction than whole proteins in at risk infants. It is nutritionally complete.
Hypoallergenic (HA) formulas are best reserved for babies at risk of developing allergies, when formula feeding has been chosen. They are not, as some would believe, necessarily easier to digest or better for fussy eaters or babies with reflux. Standard formula for these babies (or a different specialist formula such as an anti-reflux variety) is usually the best choice, providing the full range of nutrients and energy for healthy growth. If your baby has been identified as being at risk (both parents or a sibling with allergies), then Novalac Hypoallergenic could be an option for you and should be given as your baby’s first and only formula following breastfeeding.
What about cows milk allergy?
If your baby has an established cows milk allergy that has been identified by a healthcare professional, you will need a special formula, usually available by prescription from your GP or paediatrician.
