Diarrhoea

The effects of diarrhoea
Diarrhoea is often a temporary problem caused by a bacterial or viral infection. It can also be a side effect of medications or a sensitivity to food.

Typical signs of diarrhoea are frequent, loose watery stools. A lot of water plus valuable electrolytes are lost through diarrhoea and infants can quickly become dehydrated. If not treated promptly, it can lead to serious health problems.

Dehydrated babies lose energy and become lethargic and can develop secondary lactose and sucrose intolerances.

Diarrhoea can also result in damage to the intestinal lining, which can lead to poor absorption of nutrients, in particular carbohydrates and fats.

Loss of appetite can be the greatest challenge for rehydrating the infant.

What can you do to manage diarrhoea?
Always follow the advice of your healthcare professional, as dehydration can be dangerous if not treated properly. In general breastfeeding should be allowed for as often and as long as the infant wants it. It is the most compatible and digestible nutrition for infants.

If you are already bottle feeding your baby, ask your healthcare professional about a specialist formula designed to give babies until their condition improves.

How Novalac Diarrhoea helps
Novalac Diarrhoea infant formula provides nutritional support and is designed to help manage dehydration in babies with diarrhoea. It is formulated to be very low in lactose, easily digestible and has a carefully tailored electrolyte content that aids water absorption and helps manage dehydration.

It contains simple sugars such as fructose and glucose that are rapidly absorbed to provide your baby with an immediate source of energy. Novalac Diarrhoea contains banana and apple fruit powder which provides a pleasant taste along with fibre to help normalise stool consistency. Added cream of rice also provides extra fibre.

Novalac Diarrhoea is easily digested and is designed for short-term feeding. When diarrhoea improves the infant can be gradually introduced to another Novalac formula.

Re-introduction of Standard Formula

After using Novalac Diarrhoea as the only feed for up to 5 days:

  1. On the 6th day replace one Novalac Diarrhoea bottle with a standard formula bottle.
  2. On the 7th day replace two Novalac Diarrhoea bottles with two standard formula bottles and continue like this until the baby has returned to standard formula for all the bottles.
