The effects of reflux
Reflux (regurgitation) often occurs in infants because they have an immature or weak lower oesophageal sphincter, which allows acid stomach contents to return to the mouth.
It usually happens following a feed and is common – an estimated two thirds of babies regurgitate more than once a day.8 Although some babies with reflux do not seem upset by it, the acidic stomach contents can cause pain and irritation of the oesophagus.
As the lower oesophageal sphincter matures, the signs of reflux lessen, with symptoms usually resolving by 12-15 months of age.8
What can you do to manage reflux?
Breast milk is the most compatible nutrition for babies and breastfeeding should be continued as normal.
If you are already bottle feeding, talk to your healthcare professional or pharmacist about trying a specialist formula designed for reflux. For babies who are being bottle fed, reflux symptoms are usually treated with thickened formulas. These formulas tend to be less sensitive to gastric contractions, so they are less likely to be regurgitated.
How Novalac Reflux helps
Novalac Reflux infant milk formula is specially formulated to help manage reflux in babies. It contains a customised form of corn-starch, that makes it easy for your baby to drink, but thickens when it reaches your baby’s stomach. This thickening helps to prevent reflux.
Novalac Reflux is easily digestible and is nutritionally complete which means that it can be used even when the reflux symptoms improve. For best results, ensure the mixing instructions are followed carefully.
Novalac Reflux is not suitable for general use and should be used under medical supervision.
